The Brief
Research Triangle Park is a 65-year-old global icon and the largest research park in the United States. Home to more than 300 companies and over 55,000 workers across 7,000 acres, it is one of the most recognized innovation ecosystems in the world. But behind that legacy was a complex organizational reality: multiple entities, each with its own visual expression, operating without a system to connect them. The Research Triangle Foundation, Hub RTP, Frontier RTP, RTP 180, and more. Individually strong. Together, fragmented.
As RTP moved into its next chapter, integrating a new downtown social district and residential spaces into its world-famous lab environment, that fragmentation became a strategic liability. The Park needed a brand system that could hold a sprawling ecosystem together without flattening the individual identities that made each piece distinct. This was not a logo project. It was institutional brand governance at scale.
The Work
MRC was brought on in 2024 as a strategic design partner. The entry point was branding for the new social district, and the relationship grew from there into something much larger: a long-term partnership spanning brand governance, sub-brand development, real estate graphics, event and programming identity, and ongoing creative production across the entire ecosystem.
We started by auditing every existing brand expression across entities, departments, and public initiatives. From there, we built a framework that supports multiple expressions, social districts, programming arms and institutional initiatives, while still operating under a cohesive brand identity system. The goal was never uniformity. It was clarity, legibility, and recognition across every touchpoint. Standards that internal teams could actually use, not theoretical guidelines that sit in a folder.
The work has spanned a 65-year anniversary branding suite, visual identity for events and programming, sub-brand development across Hub RTP, Frontier RTP, and the new social district, and digital campaigns designed to attract the next generation of talent into the ecosystem. As an embedded partner, we do not just execute deliverables. We recommend infrastructure, advise on brand standards, and help govern how the brand operates as the organization continues to evolve.
Campaign Creative
Beyond the foundational brand system, MRC produces ongoing campaign creative that brings RTP to life in the market. Digital advertising, social media campaigns, recruitment creative, event promotion, and programming design that all draw from the same brand system while flexing to reach different audiences. The campaigns are where the brand does its day-to-day work: attracting talent, driving attendance, and keeping one of the world’s great innovation hubs visible and relevant to the next generation.

This is what it looks like when a studio becomes part of an organization’s creative infrastructure. Not internal staff. Not a traditional agency.
