The Brief
Low Bar Lounge sits below Whiskey Kitchen in downtown Raleigh, the younger, fiery sibling to its upstairs neighbor. Stiff drinks, cheap beer, great music, and a coin-operated pool table, open late every night.
The building has been an auto repair shop, a limousine dispatch, and Wake County’s first EMT station. The brief was to build a brand that felt like it had been down there the whole time. As the owners put it, dive bars never started as dive bars, they just started as bars. This was the birth of one.
That meant playfully polished, irreverent, sharp but not perfect. Nothing too on the nose, nothing trying too hard, and nothing that felt made to look old without earning it. The design and service should whisper rather than announce themselves.
The Work
MRC built the brand from positioning through launch.
The identity runs on six logo lockups, primary and secondary in both stacked and horizontal formats, a tertiary mark for merch and in-bar applications, and an LB monogram for when the brand is established enough to stand on two letters. The palette is five colors pulled from the room itself, Gold, Off-White, Merlot, Leather, and Velvet Ropes, warm and moody with a nod to Whiskey Kitchen’s rust.
The Limo anchors the whole system. Modeled after a 1984 Lincoln Town Car with a lucky 8-ball hood ornament, it’s long, low, and detailed enough to reward a second look. Around it sits a set of supporting brand elements, double-lined borders for specials, repeated diamonds for dividing a menu, and a repeating line border for collateral.
Brand positioning and voice came with it. Low Bar. High Spirits. is the primary tagline, backed by a bench of sayings the team can pull from: reliably stiff drinks, not much on the surface, get low, get down, and not another speakeasy. With a name like Low Bar, the jokes write themselves, so the guardrail was that a joke never lands at the expense of the experience.
From there, menu design, merch, and a Squarespace site to put it all in one place.
The whole team at MRC were amazing to work with from start to finish, and I couldn’t be happier with the result.
